Our winner

Kristine Grobelny, Grand River Hospital Kitchener

When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer and we were about to be transferred to sick kids in London, I had a moment where my 8 week pregnancy and my 2 year old sick daughter, took over my emotions.

I saw Kristine, a nurse I had never met before, and she looked at me and I fell on her and cried. For a long time, I cried. She didn’t leave, she got others to cover her, I’m sure, she stayed with me until I felt like I was able to stand on my own two feet again and take care of my sick daughter and unborn daughter.

It has been a year and a half, and she still takes care of my daughter with leukemia, and my infant who has been admitted in hospital 3 times in 4 months. She has been there to give a smile, a hug, or overall support through this awful time.

She deserves a break- a moment in time where she can think about herself.

Runners up

Nathika Rahumathulla, Markham Stoufville

Nathika is a passionate and dedicated emergency room nurse at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Like most nurses – she works anywhere from 10-14 hour shifts and on some days doesn’t even get a break because saving lives is more important to her than taking a much-deserved break. She deals with trauma on a daily basis but still maintains her sunny disposition. The worst part of her job is having to tell a loved one or family member that their loved one has passed on. Their reaction when this happens is something she holds to her heart and makes her count her blessings everyday. The most inspirational thing about Nathika is that she was a patient at Sick Kids Hospital for over ten years which is where she developed her love for nursing where she saw remarkable nurses give 150% of themselves to their job and patients. And this is what motivated Nathika to pursue her nursing career. Nathika’s story is only one of thousands of nursing stories and I know that if she was selected – she would be representing all the nurses out there. Submitted by KP
